According to reports, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain will depart in the coming weeks.
Klain, 61, has been informing colleagues quietly that he is leaving since the November midterm elections, according to a Saturday story in the New York Times. For the past two years, Klain has served as President Biden’s chief of staff.
It’s unclear whether a successor has been chosen or when Klain expects to make the formal announcement of his impending departure, but additional information is likely after next month’s State of the Union address, according to the newspaper.
Klain’s departure signals a high-profile move for Biden, whose tenure has not been without controversy.
Klain, a frequent Twitter user, violated the Hatch Act’s restrictions on political solicitation and misused his authority by retweeting a May 22 post encouraging people to buy “Democrats Deliver” merchandise from the partisan Democratic group Strike PAC, according to the Office of Special Counsel, which was first reported by The Post.
The retirement comes as President Biden faces investigations into secret materials discovered at the Penn Biden Center’s Washington, DC office and his home in Wilmington, Delaware.
In contrast to Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris has lost 25 staff people in her first two years in office. Among the high-profile resignations last year was Meghan Groob, Harris’ top wordsmith, who left after only four months, in July 2022.
