Many people online slammed a Democrat senator for bragging about driving her costly electric car past petrol stations, and she received backlash.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan smiled as she drove by on her route to the United States Senate, noting the high gas costs. Capitol. She made the remarks during her opening speech at a Senate Finance Committee hearing on Tuesday.
“I just have to say just on the issue of gas prices, after waiting for a long time to have enough chips in this country to finally get my electric vehicle, I got it and drove it from Michigan to here this last weekend and went by every single gas station. It didn’t matter how high it was. I’m looking forward to the opportunity for us to move to vehicles that aren’t going to be dependent on the whims of the oil companies,” Stabenow stated.
Many Americans perceived the jubilant comments as rude and tone-deaf, given how they are suffering from record high inflation and record high gas costs.
“Nothing shows how out-of-touch Democrats are like saying people should just buy an expensive electric car they can’t afford in the middle of record high inflation,” Dan Eberhart, a commentator, responded.
“Ms. Stabenow is a typically clueless, arrogant, smug, sheltered Democrat politician,” another tweet read.
“What self-righteous shrills like these don’t care, is that 90% of the American population will never be able to afford an electric car,”another naysayer stated.
Stabenow’s remarks echo those made by President Joe Biden in March, when he blamed rising gas costs on the Ukraine conflict and said that the solution was to invest in electric vehicles.
While the Biden administration has attempted to cut gas costs in the short term, they have made it plain that their long-term objective is to transition away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy sources.
