The recent demonstration held by President Joe Biden in Monterey Park, California, to support his executive order on gun control was tainted by his photo op with Ma “Derek” Shurong, a member of the China Overseas Exchange Association, a front organization for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) (COEA).
The Daily Caller News Foundation’s examination of the event’s camera footage discovered this unsettling relationship.
The Chinese Overseas Friendship Association, which merged with COEA in 2019, is also mentioned as having Ma as a member. According to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, Chinese intelligence professionals have informed the DCNF that both businesses support the United Front Work Department, a CCP “intelligence service” that engages in “influence operations” and “intelligence collection” abroad.
The Democratic Representative from California, Judy Chu, who has drawn criticism for her associations with Ma and other putative UFWD front groups’ members, was also present at the gathering. Since 2013, at least five Chinese-language news stories claim that Chu has given Ma certificates of “Congressional Recognition.”
Campaign finance reports reveal that Ma also gave $3,975 to Chu between 2009 and 2022, a timeframe that partly corresponds with Ma’s membership in both COEA and COFA.
The link between the Biden administration and the CCP and its intelligence front organizations is under scrutiny in light of Biden’s photo session with Ma and Chu’s connections to him. It is also troubling that Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who welcomed Biden at LAX airport upon his arrival, also has connections to purported UFWD front organizations.

Dominic Ng, a member of COEA and COFA, was selected by Bass as an honorary co-chair of her Mayoral Transition Advisory Team on December 6. Bass met with officials from the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) in February.
Ng has also given $35,500 to the Democratic National Committee for 2020 and $100,000 to the Biden Victory Fund.
More research should be done into these concerning ties between Biden, his administration’s friends, and CCP intelligence front groups.
Being affiliated with groups that want to undercut American principles and interests is unacceptable for the leader of the free world.
