The Make America Great Again PAC, which is in favor of Trump, issued a press release asserting that a significant number of Republicans are showing their solidarity with the ex-president.
Just a few hours prior to the announcement, Smith presented a four-point indictment against Trump. The candidate for the presidency and his supporters contended that this move was a deliberate attempt to hinder the Republican frontrunner’s chances in the 2024 presidential race. Trump is presently leading in all polls as the primary choice to secure the GOP nomination.
A prominent figure among the GOP leaders who expressed backing for the ex-president was Kevin McCarthy, the House Speaker from California and a Republican. In a released statement, he pointed out the timing of the indictment, noting its proximity to various disclosures related to the Biden family controversy and Trump’s substantial surge in recent polling numbers. McCarthy also insinuated that the Department of Justice (DOJ) might have pursued this action against the former president in order to divert public attention from the news involving President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, another Republican leader, voiced his endorsement for Trump by stating that the Department of Justice under Biden’s administration is unfairly targeting the president’s main rival in politics. He asserted that this was a flagrant and unacceptable misuse of authority, urging fellow Republicans to oppose such actions.
Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton echoed a similar sentiment, likening this situation to a program on “MSNBC.” He clarified that the indictment against Trump appears to revolve around activities protected by the Constitution, in which he participated. Cotton also highlighted that the First Amendment safeguards the ex-president’s right to freedom of speech.
Additional Republican senators who stood up for Trump encompassed Bill Hagerty, Rick Scott, Josh Hawley, J.D. Vance, Ted Budd, and Marsha Blackburn. Within the House, the large majority of Republican legislators voiced their solidarity with the former President, including Elise Stefanik, the Chair of the House Republican Conference.
