Vice President Kamala Harris used her speech at the National Education Association (NEA) annual convention on Tuesday in Chicago to discuss the shooting that took place during a Fourth of July parade in the neighborhood of Highland Park.
The president and vice president both recently advocated for an assault weapons prohibition, which Harris asked for. According to the vice president, “Congress needs to have the courage to act and renew the assault weapons ban.”
She claimed there is no reason why we should have weapons of war on the streets of America and that we need appropriate gun safety rules, characterizing an assault rifle as being built to murder many people rapidly.
Even the senators who worked on the newly enacted gun control legislation admitted that it would be impossible to completely prohibit assault weapons.
The vice president mentioned the liability shield that she claims is protecting those gun manufacturers, saying Congress needs to stop doing so, leading her to chant “Repeal It! Repeal It!” in a line that was met with applause from the audience, just as Biden called for in his gun control speech last month, which Matt highlighted at the time was full of inaccuracies.
Harris urged the NEA to support her proposal for the ban. We are aware of our obstacles, but we won’t let them stop us, she remarked. “And, NEA, we will not give up this fight. We will not tire because I know who you are; that is just not in our nature.” she said.
In a statement, the vice president claimed: “Since the beginning of our administration, not a single Republican leader in Washington has voted to save our country from a pandemic, even when we proposed funding for our teachers and children.”
“The Child Tax Credit, which benefits the poorest students and their families, was not extended by a single Republican leader in Washington, DC.
Instead, these so-called leaders who are extremists pushed against boosting your salary.”
